This class, taught by Rabbi Val Lieber on Wednesdays from June 17-July 22, delves into the culture, history, politics, family lives, and economics of Jews who immigrated to the United States between 1880-1920. We cover what led to mass migration to the United States from eastern Europe and Russia, the challenges new immigrants faced, and the amazing strides they made in a generation.
Topics include the Statue of Liberty in Jewish consciousness, friction between the German Jews and Eastern European Jews, advancement in labor rights led by Jews, giant cultural contributions in music, theater and sports, and the rise of the American First movement. We will discuss work and leisure, acculturation and conflict between 1st and 2nd generation immigrants.
