The Jewish Federation Connecting with Community presents "Breaking the Silence in Gyumri, Armenia" in recognition of International Women's Day.

In a culture that silences women, which neither values their work nor sees their stories as essential, Suzi Banks Baum is reconnecting Armenian women artists with indigenous practices of hand bound books.

Building books with them redirects a cultural trend of silence, providing them with vessels for connection.  With a slideshow of vibrant images that tell the story of Banks Baum's residencies in Armenia, we will discuss the power of art in making social change and the ways of cultural diplomacy.  Banks Baum will provide a vision for the future of New Illuminations, illustrated with brand new images from her recent residency.

Suzi Banks Baum is a writer and artist who resides in Great Barrington and believes in the power of art to kindle hope and lift people's lives.

This free program is part of the Federation’s Connecting With Community Series and will be followed by a kosher hot lunch. Lunch is a $2 suggested donation for adults over 60 years of age or $7 for all others. Advance reservations are required for lunch and can be made by calling (413) 442-2200 before 9 a.m. on the day of the program.
