After their liberation by Napoleon, French Jews thought “liberté, fraternité, égalité” included them too. The Occupation and collaborationist activity proved otherwise. Today, there is renewed anti-semitism that has several results. Some French Jews have made aliyah to Israel, while others are enjoying Jewish life in France. Today there is renewed anti-semitism. My pictures reflect the change in conditions in France over the past 30 years

Jane S. Gabin received her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and has had a varied career that includes teaching, university admissions work, college counseling, and writing. She has written several academic works and one novel, The Paris Photo, which was inspired by her father’s Army experiences in WWII. She has taught at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke University, is on the board of her synagogue and is a life long member of Hadassah.
