Join Lita Moses and her son, historian Daniel Moses, for a fascinating discussion of Lita's life growing up at the Arrowhead Lodge in the Catskills drawn from her book The Red Hotel: Tribute to a Lost World.
The Red Hotel: Tribute to a Lost World is a fascinating and unusual memoir, the work of a lifetime that strikes a particular chord today. It's a glimpse into life at The Arrowhead Lodge, a left-wing "Borsht Belt" hotel, in the 1940's and 50's, through the eyes of the daughter of the hotel proprietor. It's the story of The Slutsky family, immigrant Jews who established a set of neighboring hotels in upstate New York as they made their way in America. It's a meditation upon an historical moment with uncomfortable parallels that the reader might see. It's a song of persistent hope for a humane, inclusive, just democracy where people have a chance to thrive. It's a coming-of-age story about a girl who became a woman at a particular time and place. In this book--which Lita "Slutsky" Newman Moses vowed to write when she was twelve years old--she weaves together her personal story with heartfelt wisdom and the memorable characters, events, and places, that populate her life.
