Rabbi Caine graduated from the Jewish Theological Seminary, and, after US Army service as a chaplain, he and his wife lived for almost 4 years in Israel. where he worked and then studied at the Hebrew University. In 1967, he became the first text faculty member of the reconstructionist Rabbinical College, where he was Director of Biblical Studies for 18 years.
