The Jewish Federation of the Berkshires' Connecting with Community series presents "Jazz in Blues & The American Songbook" with guitarist Sam Rosen and pianist Richard Evans.

Jazz is the quintessential American music and the performers will explore the roots of jazz in an entertaining and educational performance.

Jazz repertoire has evolved in many forms over 100 years, drawing upon the blues, theatre, cinema, and popular song, as well as specific instrumental jazz compositions.  While not unique tto jazz, improvisation has played a central role in its development and has been considered a liberating influence.  The duo will present several selections using piano and guitar to illustrate the role of texture, rhythm, melody, and harmony in the creation of this fascinating music.

Sam Rosen is a popular Berkeley-trained jazz guitarist who plays in many local venues  Richard Evans is a retired psychiatrist who has, for many years, enjoyed playing jazz piano, most recently with local musicians.

This free program is part of the Federation’s Connecting With Community Series and will be followed by a kosher
hot lunch. Lunch is a $2 suggested donation for adults over 60 years of age or $7 for all others. Advance reservations
are required for lunch and can be made by calling (413) 442-2200 before 9 a.m. on the day of the program.
