Degas was one of the most important figures in the artistic vanguard of the nineteenth century. He painted not only ballet dancers, but other elegant topics such as racehorses. He was also interested in genre scenes, working women, portraits, and landscapes. As his family’s banking wealth soured, Degas blamed his misfortunes on Jewish bankers. The Dreyfus affair divided France and Degas rejected his dearest Jewish friends, who were like family.
