The Jewish Federation of the Berkshires presents:
Knosh & Knowledge The Career of Ulysses S. Grant
with Randy F. Weinstein, owner of North Star Rare Books and founder of the W.E.B. Du Bois Center

Weinstein will present a talk titled "Ulysses S. Grant, the Law and Order President: Did Black Lives Matter?"

Through an exhibition of artifacts and readings from his upcoming book on Civil War general and US president Ulysses S. Grant, Weinstein will examine various facts and myths relating to the 18th president as slave holder, expansionist, anti-intellectual, battlefield butcher, nativist, and anti-Semite.  He will discuss Grant's views and policies regarding the politics of race and the Law within the context of a divided America, then and now.

A longtime Berkshire resident, Randy F. Weinstein has directed a residential treatment center for challenged students, published works on African-American history and Reconstruction, established North Star Rare Books (Great Barrington), and lectures on race relations throughout the county.  He is founder of the W.E.B. Du Bois Center-Great Barrington, a non-profit providing educational programs that honestly examine historical and contemporary aspects of social justice.  His current work-in-progress is "The Best Kept Secret: The Education of Ulysses S. Grant."
