“People of the Picture Book: The History of Jewish Children’s Literature” is a three-lecture series led by Ilan Stavans that explores the illuminating journey of Jewish children’s books from the medieval “Haggadah” to the rich, multicultural literature produced worldwide today. Stavans is Lewis-Sebring Professor of Humanities, Latin American, and Latino Culture at Amherst College, publisher of Restless Books, and host of the NPR podcast “In Contrast.”

The second lecture surveys the parallel rise of psychoanalysis and the comicstrip industry in the twentieth century as the background against which Jewish children’s book classics like “Curious George,” “Where the Wild Things Are,” and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” emerged.

The final lecture will take place Tuesday, May 15, 7 p.m.
