The goal is to make Maimonides' own classical text (trans. S. Pines, Chicago, 1963) more accessible to the interested reader.
Specific topics will outline Maimonides' life and writings, and emphasize the diverse religious and scientific currents that informed his character (August 2); examine Maimonides' adaptation of biblical language and the reasons for his preference for philosophical over theological argumentation (August 9); survey Maimonides' beliefs in God, creation and prophecy (August16); and bring out Maimonides' views of providence, evil, the Law, and ultimate happiness (August 23). Feel free to bring a lunch.
