MATCHMAKING AND MIDRASH: A HEBREW COMEDY FROM THE TIME OF SHAKESPEARE.
Dr. Stephanie Siegmund, Women’s League Chair in Jewish Gender and Women’s Studies
The oldest Hebrew play in existence, “The Comedy of Betrothal,” was written by an Italian Jew from Mantua in the 16th century. Surprisingly provocative themes will be demonstrated by readings of local readers, Steven Rosenthal and Amy Brentano, whose acting experience and their love of Judaism will enrich this interactive discussion.
