Italian Jewish culture is rich with art, literature and music but the history of the Jewish people in Italy is not well known.  Familiar icons like Dante and Michelangelo played a role in how the characteristics of Italian Jewishness and Judaism were understood including origins, language and religious rites.  Dr. Ugo Goetzl will discuss current demographics and the role of Jews in the founding of the nation (1861-1870), the golden age of Italian Jewry (1871-1919), Fascism, Italian antisemitism including the Church, fictional and epistolary literature.

After retiring from a career as a neurologist, Ugo Goetzl received a PhD from the University of North Carolina in Italian Studies. His dissertation focused on Italian literary antisemitism.
