Beautiful Tree, Severed Roots is Kenny Mann’s documentary about her parents’ extraordinary lives as Jewish refugee immigrants to Kenya during World War II, and about that country’s turbulent history through the mid-twentieth century. It is also about living multiple lives as a reluctant Jew, a white person in an African country, an anti-colonialist in a British colony, and a “fake” Brit in an Eastern European family.
