Great Jewish Opera Singers

At 1 p.m. on Monday, September 23, the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires will sponsor the program "Great Jewish Opera Singers," with Professor Peter Podol.  Podol will present a musical survey of the best from the 1920s through the 1980s using audio and video recordings - and including some "live" performances.  Open to the public, and at a cost of $3, the program will be held at Congregation Knesset Israel, 16 Colt Road, Pittsfield.

Among the artists to be heard: Alexander Kipnis, Joseph Schmidt, Leonard Warren, Robert Merrill, Richard Tucker, and Roberta Peters.  Podol, whose doctorate is from the University of Pennsylvania, is a life long opera fan and a patron of peformances at the Metropolitan Opera for over fifty years. In addition, he has taught the genre extensively, often accessing his personal collection which dates to 1900.
